about
"It's The Water" began in 2014 as a contribution to a fundraising CD for the Okanogan Highlands Watershed, which was then being ravaged by the Kinross Gold Mine, and saw it's completion after Laura's return from the Standing Rock encampment of Indigenous Water Protectors in 2016.
lyrics
Verse 1) The redwing blackbird needs you/ Pretty little bird, needs me too/ She can't call, if I don't answer/ She can't call if I don't answer/ Verse 2) The Canada Lynx needs you/ Sweet little lynx, needs me too/ Needs this place, safe to roam/ Buckhorn Mountain is her home/ Chorus: And it's the water/ When it's gone it's long gone/ We can't drink it when the mining's done/ There's nothing golden but the sun/ The sun, oh the beautiful sun/ Verse 3) Standing Rock, needs you/ Missouri River needs me too/ It can't flow, if I don't go/ It can't flow if I don't go/ Chorus: And it's the water/ When it's gone it's long gone/ We can't drink it when the pipeline breaks/ We can't live beside a coal black snake/ Our bodies and souls are what it takes/ Our souls/ Our beautiful souls/ Verse 4) Everything that we hold dear/ The earth, the sky, the breathing air/ These things were bought/ These things were sold/ But they were much more precious than the gold/ Choruses
